Sagging Gate Repair: Why Gates Drag and How I Fix Them

By Jeff Rabkin, JustFix Wood · Published October 14, 2026

A gate that drags on the ground or won't latch is one of the most common calls I get. Most of the time it's a quick fix. You almost never need a new gate.

Start with the hinge post

Before I touch the gate, I check the post it hangs on. A gate is a lever, and all of its weight pulls on that one post. If the post leans, is loose in the ground, or has gone soft at the soil line, the gate will sag no matter what you do to the gate.

Push on the hinge post. If it moves, the post needs to be reset or replaced. Frost heave and rot at grade are the usual causes around here.

Then look at the gate frame

If the post is solid, the gate frame has racked out of square. Wood gates sag toward the latch side over time. That's especially true without a diagonal brace, or when the brace runs the wrong way. The brace should run from the bottom hinge corner up to the top latch corner, so it holds the weight up instead of letting it fall.

Fixes, from simplest to biggest:

  • Re-square the gate and add or correct the diagonal brace
  • Add a steel anti-sag cable and turnbuckle kit
  • Replace rotted rails or the brace itself

Hinges and fasteners

Loose hinge screws let a gate drop a little at a time. Swapping short wood screws for longer exterior structural screws or through-bolts makes a big difference. A heavy gate needs heavy-duty hinges. If the hinges are rusted or bent, replace them.

Latch alignment

Once the gate hangs right, I reset the latch and the stop so it closes cleanly. If you have a pool or kids, that self-closing, self-latching hardware matters.

When it's time for a new gate

If most of the gate's boards and rails are soft, rebuilding it costs about the same as replacing it. I'll tell you straight.

Send me three photos: the whole gate, the hinge side and the bottom where it drags. Text them to 612-382-1306 and I'll tell you what it needs.

Three photos and a zip code.
